Report #022: Waveney and Norfolk Harriers @ The Poplars, St Michael South Elham, 22/8/23

At circa 06:00 yesterday morning, the Waveney and Norfolk Harriers were found holding up a wood just south of The Poplars in a textbook scene of a cubbing meet.*

From a SW position, a minimum of 5 riders were seen on point** with voice calls, horn blowing, speaking hounds and saddle slapping*** all heard during this time. The riders remained in this position for a further 25 minutes. Huntsman Luke Newton was with hounds in the wood for this entire time.

At this time the hunt became aware of our presence and immediately headed south back to the road then heading straight back to the meet at The Poplars where hounds were boxed and riders dismounted.

Are you spotting the differences between these midweek meets and their advertised weekend meets?

Full post comparing the two strategies of the Norfolk and Waveney Harriers to follow.

* Cubbing (also ‘Autumn Hunting’): The period that precedes the main hunting season, hounds are trained to hunt foxes via hunting fox cubs.

** On point: Riders place themselves strategically around an area, usually a wood, where they expect the fox(es) to emerge from with a view to scaring the animal back into the woods and towards the hounds.

*** Saddle slapping: A rider hits their saddle with the aim of making enough sound to scare fleeing animals back towards the hounds. Usually accompanied by verbal sounds.
